Sagitar (aka Tharkus) is an action figure from the Mattel He-Man toy line and a character from the animated series The New Adventures of He-Man. He can transform from a centaur-like being into a four-armed humanoid.

Character history[]

Toyline biography[]

Galloping Battle Beast from the planet Palomar, Sagitar was saved from a life of slavery in the Denebrian mines by He-Man. In return for his freedom, he carries He-Man into battle on his back and uses his palomite running knuckles for galloping or serving up super knuckle sandwiches for Mutants. Although some of the Galactic Guardians don't like his beastly manners they are glad to have this four-armed giant on their side in battle.

Mission: To use all four of his mighty arms, his shield, and his sword to help He-Man free Primus from the evil clutches of Skeletor.

Sagitar hailed from the planet Equinos. His people were peaceful, but powerful warriors. On Equinos, Sagitar had a mate named Besquita and was a friend to the planet's leader, General Niquour. At some point, Equinos was attacked and looted by the Mutant, Staghorn, and he and Sagitar encountered one another and developed a deep-seated personal rivalry. Though he maintained a gruff exterior, Sagitar was very caring, particularly towards animals[1].

Travelling the universe, Sagitar later encountered the Galactic Guardians on a trip to Gorn City. Seeing that the Guardians were outmatched by a hulking, empowered Quakke, Sagitar stepped in and used his considerable strength to best the Mutant. Grateful to Sagitar, and impressed by his fighting abilities, Captain Hydron offered him a place amongst the Guardians, which Sagitar accepted[2].

Some time later, Sagitar would encounter his old nemesis, Staghorn, once again, and the two would fight frequently, seeking to settle their feud once and for all. Staghorn's personal hatred of Sagitar was so strong that it often endangered Skeletor's schemes[3].

During the Mutant invasion and occupation of Primus, Sagitar was taken prisoner, stunned into a magical trance by the transforming Anadroids[4].

After saving the life of Felca, Slush Head's fiance, a grateful Slush Head asked Sagitar to served as the best man at his wedding, which Sagitar reluctantly accepted. The wedding ultimately turned into an all-out brawl between the Galactic Guardians and the Mutants, and Sagitar found himself facing off against Staghorn once more[5].

Though living on Primus, Sagitar still needed to return Equinos for a ritual known as the "running of the Herd" every thirteen telks, in which his people galloped around their planet to restore their life force in tribute to their horse ancestors. On one occasion, Sagitar miscalculated the date of the ritual, and his absence caused him to act irrational and aggressive. He attacked his fellow Guardians and tried to seize control of the Starship Eternia in a paranoid rage, until he was subdued by He-Man. Quickly racing Sagitar home, the Guardians discovered that Equinos had been invaded by Skeletor and the Mutants. Sagitar and his people launched an attack against the invaders and managed to drive them back, culminating in a one on one battle between Sagitar and his arch rival, Staghorn. Their final confrontation took place on a cliff ledge, with Sagitar using all his strength to hurl Staghorn off the cliff and into the lake below[6].

Behind the Scenes[]

  • Sagitar was designed by David Wolfram, originally to feature a more overtly equine head and hooves.[7]
  • His name is taken from Sagittarius, the centaur-themed astrological sign in the Zodiac, but pronounced with a hard 'G', as in 'sag'. He was conceived of (and marketed in Europe) under the name Tharkus, a nod to the Tharks from John Carter. [8]
